Over the years black women have led the way in shinning the spotlight on fibroids and how painful they can truly be. Last year I was diagnosed with 10 large fibroids and a severely enlarged uterus. As it is very common approximately 8 in 10 black women will experience this condition during their lifetime.

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They are common among women of reproductive age and black women are at a higher risk of developing them. If your fibroids are causing you severe symptoms that are treatment options to consider.

Medications: These are low risk way to control period related issues such as heavy bleeding. But most medications are hormone based and therefore cannot be taken if you are trying to get pregnant.

Uterine fibroid embolization: This is a minimally invasive procedure that block blood flow to fibroids causing fibroid to shrink and symptoms.

Radiofrequency fibroid ablation: This is the newest technology to shrink fibroids and treat related symptoms. Fibroid ablation is also minimally invasive and can be done through the vagina or through small incisions depending on the fibroid location.

Myomectomy: This procedure removes fibroids surgically and can be done through the vagina or the abdomen. Myomectomy is the traditional surgery for people who have symptoms but also want to preserve pregnancy in the future.

Regardless of the causes for fibroid growth many treatment options can address goals such as preserving the uterus or the ability to have children in the future. Every woman has the right to be treated with care and to know their options. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and always be an advocate for yourself.
