To some people, fashion is all about the rules: don’t wear this, always wear that, blah blah blah whatever. If you ask me, fashion is about expressing yourself — and that means dressing outside the box.
If you’ve ever felt like “fashion rules” were keeping your from living your best life (and wearing your best outfit), you can break the rules! In fact, here are a few rules that you should be breaking.
6 fashion rules you should be breaking
Don’t Wear White After Labor Day
Fashion historians believe that this rule stems from an old-fashioned dose of classism: after labor day, the rich folks of the world would return from their summer homes and pack away all their white clothes (which get dirty easily and were expensive to wash).
Well, guess what? Nearly everyone has a washing machine now, and there’s nothing more chic than wearing white in a snowstorm (provided you’re warm enough). So go ahead, wear your white clothes all year-long!
Lose the Canadian Tuxedo
When Britney and Justin wore head-to-toe denim to the American Music Awards in 2001, the fashion world collectively cringed. But if you ask me, the pop stars were ahead of their time, plain and simple!
Believe it or not, you can make denim on denim look damn good. By using different washes, and textures (for example, torn or distressed jeans), you can create a look that’s both casual and cool.
“Menswear” is For Men
Girl, please. Women have been rocking menswear for nearly a century — Katharine Hepburn, Diane Keaton, Grace Jones, the list goes on. However, this style has always seemed “avant-garde.” Well guess what — it’s certainly not anymore!
Wearing a tailored suit and tie is a particularly chic (and sexy) look for a woman, whether you’re going to a holiday party or a job interview. Experiment with different cuts and styles until you find the look you love!
One Color At A Time
We have a problem these days: too many people are afraid to wear color! Sure, they’ll wear a pop of color here and there, but no one wants to rock the rainbow head to toe. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a real shame.
Of course, if you are going to rock an array of colors, we do have one suggestion: try to choose shades that are evenly spaced on the color wheel. This way, the colors will complement one another and you can look your very best!
Follow The Fashion Rules
And now we’ve come to the biggest myth in the fashion world: the myth that any of these rules matter! Like I mentioned earlier, fashion is all about self-expression, and that means there’s never a need for rules.
So, the next time you find yourself wondering if you can “get away with” a look you love, take a breath and remember: of course you can! If you think you look good in a white tailored suit in the middle of January, put that suit on and get ready to slay! Trust me, if you look happy and confident, no one will notice if you break a fashion rule or two.
